Congenital Small Bowel Obstruction




Abstract
The present report is a study of 36 cases with small bowel obstruction due to congenital anomalies during 14 years period from January 1970 to December 1983 at the Department of Surgery of Chonnam National University Hospital.
The results obtained are as follows.
1) Of 36 cases with congenital small bowel obstruction, 14 cases (38.9%) were duodenal obstruction, 9 cases (25%) were jejunal obstruction, and 13 cases (36. 1%) were ileal obstru-ction.
2) Among 36 cases with congenital small bowel obstruction, 9 cases (25%) were atresia, 9 cases (25%) were malrotation, 6 cases (16.7%) were congenital band, 4 cases (11 %) were stenosis, 2 cases (5.5%) were annular pancreas, 1 case (2.7%) was duplication, 1 case (2.7%) was superior mesenteric artery syndrome, and 1 case (2.7%) was Meckel¢¥s diverticulum.
3) The ratio of male and female was 2.2: 1
4) Bilious vomiting was recorded in 100 percent, abdominal distention developed in 69.4 per-cent, 41.7percent of these patients did not pass meconium, and jaundice occurred in 27.8 percent.
5) Associated malformation was present in 6 cases (16.7%) of the total.
6) Maternal polyhydramnios were present in three cases.
7) Complications after surgery were wound infection (3 cases), aspiration pneumonia (2 cases), enterocutaneous fistula (1 case), and adhesive ileus (1 case)
8) The mean days of hospitalization was 11.
9) The overall motality for the patients was 13.8 percent(5 cases) and the cause of death were aspiration pneumonia(2 cases), respiratory distress(1 case) and sepsis(2 cases).
